Friday Discussion: Do You Sew?

I'm a bit of a seamstress (I was gonna say sewer but that looks just like sewer--where your potty goes--so I changed it) well, not really but I like to imagine that I am. The truth is my mother-in-law has taught me nearly everything I know. The woman is a pure genius when it comes to a needles, thread and fabric. She makes patterns out of nothing and knows the ins and outs of nearly every fabric.

So I've learned a few things, like how to take a shirt I like and use it for a pattern for a new shirt (I'm still working on sleeves). Today I got bored with everything I own, and the fact that I don't fit into any of them, and I decided to make myself a new skirt. It wasn't until half way through that I realized how absolutely cool it was that I can actually say, "Hmm, I don't like anything I own, so I think I'll make something new." And that's just what I did.

Can you sew? Have you ever made ANYTHING that you're proud of? I think the thing I'm most proud of is my son's quilt that I made out of his father's old Army uniforms (since they changed the uniform we have been left with a large quantity of useless military stuff), it wasn't easy to make and actually gave me more than my fair share of blisters in the process. I love it! I love how warm it is and how it has pockets and patches on nearly every square. It is by far my favorite project I've ever done.

So go on... tell me what you've done.

You need to post a picture, I'd love to see what it looks like. :)

you should post a picture of the army quilt. I have only sewed crafty things like my I spy bags.

She can make something great out of no pattern at all. But if you ask her to, she will always say she can't. She can though, I've had her do it at times and so has Victoria. Good for you Charity for taking on that skill also. I think I am going to get lessons too. Will's aunt will give me lessons. Mom taught me when I was younger but I don't remember and I hated to unpick so I didn't stick with it. Too bad because I could have been taught by the master and been a master by now too. Hind sight is 20/20

I've taught myself a few things over the years. And recently I've really put my sewing machine to good use. I traced a apron of Emma's and made a new one for her and Corbin. They turned out so cute, and I'm so proud to make them myself. Yea! And Yea for you!

upload successful, now I'm going to go take some headache medicine and see if I can't force myself through that midterm portfolio before my brain actually explodes from exhaustion.

I totally love making halloween costumes, especially period costumes. I made Katie's this year. She is 'Violet Boudelaire' from A Series of Unfortunate Events. I'll try to get all my holloween costumes on my blog after Halloween. I like to attempt one a year. I have 2 others for me that I could probably sell for hundreds of dollars, but I love them and can't part with them. Tough I had an idea that if I was to make some I didn't love and sell them, I could pay off some bills. I just got talked into helping to make 50 costumes for a dance acadamy here too, by mid-December. Good luck to me, Huh?

LOVE the quilt. That is so very cool. It makes me feel inspired. Just how many sets of old bdus does my dearest have languishing in boxes in the garage, anyway?
