I'll Fly Away, Fly Away, Fly Away!

Cosmic Question #3

How do flies get on the ceiling? Do they fly up to it and then flip over really quickly or do they fly to the wall and then walk up to the ceiling?

OR do they kind of fly in an ark that ends upside down? Can flies fly upside down?

And why are bugs so attracted to light? I mean if we're going to explore this subject than we might as well cover all the bases.

Humdinger of a question.

My guess is fly up and flip over quickly.

I KNOW THIS ONE!!!

Dad used to have a book, titled To Know a Fly. A great book, a lot of fun to read and full of fascinating information. This guy studied flies and wrote it all down in a very entertaining format. I'd love to get my own copy of it someday, but it costs a fortune on Amazon.

One of the things he studied was how they land upside down. They fly up close to their target, reach up with their front legs, snag their landing spot, and do a quick back flip.

So there you go - more useless scientific trivia from your nerd sister, who reads about insects for entertainment.

Seriously, though - entirely worth reading if you ever get your hands on a copy.
