Modesty: Academy for Little Ladies Lesson 3

Instructor Vicbowin was excited to interview Cannwin this week. So today she will be asking the questions. We are discussing modesty.

How do you know when you're being modest?
I try to remember the phrase--head, shoulder's, knee's and toes. It goes like this:

Raise your hands above your head. Does your shirt lift up and your belly show?
Put your hands on your shoulders. Can you see your shoulders?
Put your hands on your knees. Are your clothes above the knee?
Touch your toes. Does the back of your shirt lift up and show your skin?

If you said yes to any of these then you are in need of a wardrobe change.

Is it possible to be immodest with your makeup?
I think so. Sometimes people use makeup to do more than just look pretty. Sometimes they use it to attract boys to them or to tell boys that they are willing to do things they shouldn't be doing. This is when makeup becomes immodest. Makeup should be about accentuating your simple beauty--or for fun on Halloween to make you look silly.

Is it immodest to use your clothes to attract boys?
Just because your clothes cover your shoulders and your knees and your belly doesn't always mean that it's modest. Clothes that are to tight or clothes that are see-through are also immodest. Plus clothes that have inappropriate words on them... like bad words or mean words, those are also immodest.

A lot of times women think if they dress in tight fitting, or otherwise immodest, clothes that men will like them more. This isn't true.

When you know that you have value beyond your looks, then boys will treat you that way as well.

If you treat yourself as if your value is only in your looks, boys will treat you that way too.

The interview ended abruptly when Vicbowin realized there were people to play with nearby. Cannwin is still reeling from the incredible three questions she was asked.

She kills me with her spunk. Sometimes I feel a little unprepared for the questions she asks.

We've already had the birds and the bee's talk because she flat out asked:

"Mom tell me how babies are made... the for real answer, Mom, seriously."

She was in 1st grade!

At three she asked me what would happen to her and her brother if we both died.

At four she asked what kind of people did people eat and when I said none she wanted to know EXACTLY why not. My answer of 'it's socially unacceptable' wasn't good enough. She wanted to know why it wasn't... I didn't have an answer!

She's a very smart, curious girl that I often feel a little unprepared for. :)

--Angela,
